Success Principles: Beware of this person

Becoming Successful: Beware of this person

Building a business can be difficult, especially when it is your first business. Like doing anything new, you may reach out to people in your circle for advice. Looking for a voice of reason you ask people’s opinions on your venture. Some people will tell you to go for it, follow your dreams and see what happens. Some people won’t care, they’ll tell you good luck and keep it pushing. Plenty of people will tell you it’s a bad idea and don’t do it. Neither of those groups mentioned above will hurt you. You can hear their words and brush it off. There is a more sinister type of person in your circle. Someone whose words cut deeper than a razor. I call them the well-meaner. A well-meaner is a person that means well, wants the best for you, but has no experience your field.

"If you succeed they will say they always believed you could it; If you fail they will say I told you so."

A well-meaner(WM) is a person that you trust and that is what makes them dangerous. It is very easy to be convinced by someone you trust. You appreciate the counsel they give and take their words as facts. A well-meaner can be your parents, spouse, or bestfriend. They do not want you to fail or experience pain. They will tell you that your idea is too risky. They may say that your venture is unfulfilling. Truth is they have your best interest at heart, and you can feel it. The worst part about a well-meaner is that they are inexperienced in the field you are pursing. In the real world their advice on this subject wouldn’t hold water. You should be looking for advice from the people that have experience in the area you are pursing. Don’t get me wrong you can learn something from everybody, but make sure a good dose of learning is coming from experienced folks. When dealing with a WM you should ask yourself, “Does this person have positive experience in this”? If the answer is no, thank them for the advice and keep it pushing.  Why do WMS give advice like this? Well, they know you very well. They may feel you aren’t smart enough, strong enough, brave enough, or capable enough. It really does not matter what WMS think. You should not allow anyone to put their limitations on you. As a hustler we make decisions and take all the consequences that come with them.

Here is my well-meaner story

Growing up I wanted to open a club or a bar. I told very close to me that I was looking to open a bar. He told me that it wasn’t a good idea. I asked a few questions and he basically told me that he knew a few people that opened clubs. He told me all of these horror stories and that I didn’t want to have those types of problems. I trusted this guy so I gave the dream up.

This man never owned a club, he never had a business and, I don’t even know if he knew any club owners. Thinking back to that conversation I laugh at how gullible I was. THIS IS THE POWER OF A WELL-MEANER. Since the idea was hard, I let him convince that I didn’t want to do it and that I couldn’t do it. A person with zero experience told me that I couldn’t do it. Even if he had a little experience, I should not have let anyone tell me what I couldn’t do. I should have acknowledged his concerns and searched for more counsel. I don’t fault him; he was doing the right thing by protecting me. As hustlers, you must be ready to take risk. You can’t accomplish something new if you keep taking the same old actions. A WMS negative words will have you in the same life you have always had, listen and take heed then move forward anyway. If you succeed they will say they always believed you could it; If you fail they will say I told you so. So, who gives a fuck take control of your life and take the actions you deem necessary!

Anytime you do something new you will reach out for advice, and that’s cool. I want you to be aware of how the advice is affecting you. Be mindful that you are living your life and making your own decisions. Be aware that a well-meaners advice can change the course of your life if you allow it.

Keep hustlin’ Take Chances and build the life of your dreams. Your well-meaners will thank you when you succeed!
